Russian Dock Woodlands – 3 September

97 volunteers came out and gave their 4 hours at Russian Dock Woodlands on Thursday. Volunteers helped dig out and remove bramble along a ditch and clear rubbish from the surrounding areas. Four hours by each volunteer helped native wildflowers to recolonise and help the birds, bees, and butterflies of the area. Folks who spend time in the Woodlands will now be able to plant lots of nice bulbs and plants.

Russia Dock Woodland, once known as the Grand Surrey Inner Dock, was created in 1980. Carved out of a former dock basin, the Woodland is a recreational space, which provides the local community who live and work nearby the opportunity to escape the busy streets and enjoy the haven of green space.

Volunteers, you got absolutely loads done and our partner was extremely happy with everything! Thank you so much. It really will make a difference to the park. So we'll see you at the Royal Albert Hall on the 25th September, hope you have an amazing time - you earned it!!

  6. Dear Orange RockCorps

My belated big THANK YOU for your excellent work and good company on 3 September 2009. It was a happily busy and productive day - with sun shine and blue sky to cheer us on. You could not have picked a better day to come and offer us your much appreciated help for it coincided with our historic celebration of winning the first prestigious nationwide Green Flag Award that was attended by Local Residents, Southwark News, Southwark Council's representatives and Simon Hughes MP for North Southwark & Bermondsey and President of the Liberal Democrat Party.

Some of you may remember seeing me spending a lot of time taking photos and I was so pleased to see Georgia ("hey does anyone have the pics from here iv'e been checking everyday and they havent been posted." - 10 September 2009 @ 13:40) and Derek ("Where are the pictures from this day?..." - 12 September 2009 @ 19:44) asking to see the photos of the day via your project blog postings. I do indeed have some photos that I would very much like to share with you as my thank you gift of friendship and goodwill for all you have done and achieved in Russia Dock Woodland on 3 September 2009 for our common good. Everyone who talked to me about your work, including Steve Cornish, Chairman of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, was full of praises and gratitude.

I have specially prepared a 10-page Photo-Report as a souvenir record for this very special day and devoted the entire Page 9 to Orange RockCorps Big Tidy Up on a historic day in Russia Dock Woodland. This report has just been posted on The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland Website and can be accessed for free online viewing and download via the web link : http://www.russiadockwood.ukfriends.com/html/green_flag_award.html Unfortunately, I have grossly underestimated the number of volunteers on the day and incorrectly stated there were some 40 of you and have just read from your Project Blog that there were in fact 97 volunteers! Please accept my apology for the reporting error and I will post a correction message on The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland Website to put the record straight.

I have also posted 2 Orange RockCorps items, one Photo-Flyer and one extra photo on the Rotherhithe Community Safety Forum's Environment, Ecology & Conservation (EEC) Public Photos Website which can be accessed for free online viewing and download via the two web links below :

I have other photos that I would be very happy to share with you and please let me know using my email address ( kam@khleung.fsnet.co.uk ) if you wish to see or receive other photos I have taken. Please feel free to use any photos or reports that you may get from me and use them as you see fit without the need to first seek my approval.

Last but certainly not least, a young lady Orange RockCorp, with fair skin and hair if I remember correctly, has kindly spoken with me on the day and asked to take two photos of me under the Green Flag. I was too pre-occupied trying to take photos for my report of the day to reciprocate her kindness and did not even offer to take a photo for her in return. I also did not ask for her name and thank her properly. If that very kind lady will be reading this message, please forgive me for not playing host properly and I wish to say a belated heart-felt thank you for your generosity of spirit and the great kindness you have shown me.

Thank you again for all you have done and the 'positive' difference you have made in Russia Dock Woodland on 3 September 2009. Please come and visit Russia Dock Woodland ( http://www.russiadockwood.ukfriends.com/ ) again and also the adjoining Stave Hill Ecology Park ( http://www.urbanecology.org.uk/stavehill.html ). I hope you will all have a most enjoyable time at the Royal Albert Hall on the 25 September 2009 and the very best of luck for all your future endeavours. People like you deserve to succeed.

    All best wishes
